Dragging around and arranging your iPhone or iPad apps one by one on an iOS device can be a very cumbersome process, especially if you have a lot of apps installed. This guide will show you how to speed up the process of organizing apps by using iTunes.

Arranging apps on your iPhone or iPad is as simple as long-pressing on an app's icon, waiting until all the icons wiggle, and then dragging the apps around to where you want them. The downside to using this method, especially if you have a lot of apps installed, is that you can only move one app at a time. This simple guide will show you how to arrange multiple iOS apps using iTunes.

The first thing you need to do is open up iTunes on your computer. When your iOS device is connected to your computer, you should see it listed in the left sidebar under Devices. Click on the device's name.

Screenshot by Jason Cipriani

You should then see a screen similar to the one above. While there is a lot of information on this screen, right now we are only concerned with the Apps option at the top. Click on Apps.

Screenshot by Jason Cipriani

On the left you will be shown a list of what apps are installed on your iOS device, and you can check a box to install or uninstall each app. To the right you will see a picture of your device's screen, complete with your current app placement.

On the far right you will see smaller snapshots of the screens on your device. These can be rearranged just by dragging and placing a screen above or below another screen.

The apps on each screen can also be moved around and rearranged by simply dragging and dropping them where you choose. You can move one app at a time, or select multiple apps and move them as a group. You can also create and rename folders the same way you would on the iOS device.

Screenshot by Jason Cipriani

To select multiple apps you need to hold down the Shift key on your keyboard and then click on the apps you would like to move. Each app that you have selected will get a blue border around it once it is selected.

In the picture above, we have selected eight apps. Now we are going to move them out of this folder and to a new screen.

Screenshot by Jason Cipriani

Click and hold on one of the selected apps, dragging the group of apps to the right. There will be a grayed-out screen at the bottom of the screens list. Drag the icon stack to this screen, and release the mouse. As you hover your cursor over the new screen, the bigger screen will change to reflect what is currently on that screen. In this instance, the screen starts out blank, then changes to show the apps we dropped there.

Screenshot by Jason Cipriani Screenshot by Jason Cipriani

The apps are lined up on the new screen in the same order as they were when we originally selected them. From this point you can move one, two, or more of the apps around and get them in a preferred arrangement.

One more thing to note: this is also a great method for deleting apps. When your mouse cursor is hovering over an app icon, you will see an X appear. Clicking on the X will delete the app from your iOS device.

When all of your apps are moved into their new locations and you are happy with the layout, make sure to click Apply in the bottom-right corner of iTunes. Alternatively, if you have moved a ton of stuff around and you aren't happy with the results, click Revert to go back to your current layout.

How to use itunes to quickly organize apps on iphone and ipad

iTunes is good enough as a media player, there do exist better options, but when it comes to managing an iOS device, it has some pretty neat tricks up its sleeve.

Chief among these are the Apps settings. With the Apps settings you can quickly and easily manage apps and home screens using your computer. In addition to being able to effortlessly remove apps that you've installed from the Apps Store, you can also reorganize app icons and the order that they appear, you can drag apps to different home screens, and you can even rearrange home screens, with just a few drags and clicks.

It's all very reminiscent of how Launchpad works, which we recently covered, except with iTunes, you have even more top-down control over your iOS apps.

Accessing Your Device via iTunes

If you use an iPad or iPhone then you've probably used iTunes at some point to manage your music or device. Some users might have even had to use iTunes to upgrade to iOS 8. But, beyond simply syncing your music and movies, many may not realize you can also handily manage your apps.

The quickest and fastest way to connect your iPad or iPhone is to plug it in with the cable.

How to use itunes to quickly organize apps on iphone and ipadLittle else is faster than good ol' Thunderbolt.

You can also sync your iPad or iPhone wirelessly via Wi-Fi, which isn't as fast but is sure a lot more convenient. To do this, you must first make sure that the option is enabled in iTunes. Click the device icon in iTunes.

How to use itunes to quickly organize apps on iphone and ipad

Now under the Summary settings, scroll down to Options and make sure "Sync with this iPad over Wi-Fi" is checked (obviously if you have an iPhone it will say "iPhone").

How to use itunes to quickly organize apps on iphone and ipad

Now you're all set to manage and sync your apps and device's home screens.

The Apps Settings

Right below the Summary settings is the Apps option. The left side is dedicated to your apps you've installed from the App Store.

How to use itunes to quickly organize apps on iphone and ipad

You can sort apps, such as by name, kind, category, and so on. Next to each app is a "Remove" button, which will uninstall the app. You can also search for an app, or narrow a group of apps down by search string.

How to use itunes to quickly organize apps on iphone and ipad

On the right side is the "Home Screens" section, and this is where the real magic of iTunes app management happens. First, you can use the slider at the top to enlarge or shrink your home screens. Slide it over to the left and you can see your home screens (called "Pages) arrayed side-by-side.

How to use itunes to quickly organize apps on iphone and ipad

Moving the slider to the right will give you greater detail and allow you to better see what's on each page.

How to use itunes to quickly organize apps on iphone and ipad

If you click the little "+" in the upper-right corner, you can add a new home screen. There doesn't appear to be an obvious way to remove it, but we found that you can click the "Revert" button and it will go away.

How to use itunes to quickly organize apps on iphone and ipad

So what else can you do with the home screen options? For one you can quickly reorder app icons and screens. To move apps around or to another home screen, you need to double-click to zoom.

How to use itunes to quickly organize apps on iphone and ipad

You can now reorder apps on that home screen by dragging them. If you drag the icon beyond the home screen's border, you can place it on another. The destination home screen will zoom and you can place the app on it where you prefer.

If you want to move more than one icon at a time, you need to hold the "Control" button on your keyboard and then click to select every app you want to affect; a blue border will appear around each selected app.

How to use itunes to quickly organize apps on iphone and ipad

Note also, that you can remove apps by tapping the gray "X" in the upper-left corner. This is the same method of removing App Store apps as on your iPhone, iPad, and even OS X's Launchpad. Also, iTunes won't let you move a group of selected apps to another home screen if there isn't enough room.

Speaking of groups, just like if you were using the device itself, if you drag one icon over the top of another, you can create a folder of apps and rename it to something appropriate. If you want to remove a folder, simply drag all the icons out of it.

How to use itunes to quickly organize apps on iphone and ipad

Finally, and this is a real timesaver, let's say you want to reorder home screens. For instance, let's say you get done rearranging a bunch of icons and you realize you want page 2 to come before page 1.

How to use itunes to quickly organize apps on iphone and ipad

Just drag the screens into your preferred order.

How to use itunes to quickly organize apps on iphone and ipad

When you're done with auditing your apps and moving them and your home screens around, simply click "Apply" to sync your changes. If you change your mind, again you can hit "Revert" and everything will go back to the way to the way it was before.

Always remember to hit "Apply" to save and sync your changes.

Being able to make these changes – to quickly move apps or app groups from one home screen to another, or rearrange home screens – means that you can do in almost no time, what would normally take much, much longer using the touchscreen interface on your iPhone or iPad. We all know how tedious simply moving app icons around can be, using iTunes makes very short work of that.

We'd like to now hear from you now. Do you or have you ever used iTunes to manage your iOS device's apps and home screens? Has this article been useful to you? Sound off in our discussion forum and share your thoughts with us.

If you are like me then chances are you have a large number of apps installed on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. Once you load up your iOS device tens (even hundreds) of apps it could be hard to figure out which apps you don't use that frequently. If you don't have access to iTunes then this could be a fairly tiring process as you have to go through each page and folder to do so. A better way of finding this out is by reviewing a list of installed apps.

Viewing installed apps in a list is simple in iTunes but what you might not know is doing the same on the iPhone is even easier. Follow the two methods mentioned below to view the list of installed apps on your iPhone.

Usage option in Settings

How to use itunes to quickly organize apps on iphone and ipad

The best way to view installed apps in a list is through 'Usage' section of the Settings app. This section not only lists the apps but also shows how much space is used and how much is available. Apart from that it also lets users know how much memory is a particular app is using. To access this you have to open Settings > General > Usage. From this page you can also remove individual apps you don't need anymore and find out how much memory stock apps such as Photos & Camera and Music are using.

Through Spotlight in iOS 7

How to use itunes to quickly organize apps on iphone and ipad

While getting a list of installed apps on an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch is done with far superiority with the method mentioned above another great way of doing it is through iOS 7's spotlight search feature. To do so swipe down on the homescreen to reveal the spotlight search field. Next enter a period or '.'. After doing this you will be presented with a list of all applications installed on that iOS device including the stock ones. Tapping on an app will launch it.

View the information stored on your iPhone such as images, photos, videos, music, recordings, etc. and copy files between your PC and the device.

Apple's iTunes may be fine for managing and playing music, but it isn't exactly up to snuff as an application manager for the iPhone, iPod touch, and the recently released iPad. There are, however, a couple of tricks that make managing your App Store purchases just a little easier.

Bulk Selecting and Deselecting Apps
If you already own an iPhone or iPod touch and just purchased an iPad, there's a good chance you already own a long list of apps. Unfortunately, all of your apps are automatically selected and are ready to load first time you connect your iPad to your computer — and deselecting apps one at a time is a real pain.

Command-click to deselect all apps

To deselect all of the apps in iTunes so you can pick the few you really want to add to your new iPad, do this:

  • Make sure iTunes is running, and connect your iPad to your computer with a Dock to USB cable.
  • Select your iPad in the iTunes Library column.
  • Click the Apps tab.
  • Command-click on any app in the Apps list.

Now you can click the check boxes for just the apps you want to install, and you won't have to deal with single apps scattered across Home Screen pages — an annoying side effect of deselecting apps one at a time.

You can sort apps by name, date or category

If your app list iTunes is especially long, scrolling to find just what you want to install can be a slow process. Instead of scrolling, try typing the name of an app in the search field at the top of the app list. You can also sort apps alphabetically, by date, or by category from the Sort by Name pop-up menu. It's at the top of the app list, too.

Organizing Apps on your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad
Sorting and rearranging apps on your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad is more of an exercise in patience because dragging apps between screens is a slow and clumsy process. While it isn't elegant, rearranging apps in iTunes on your computer is at least less frustrating.

You'll need to have your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad connected to your computer to see which Home Screens your apps are showing up on, and you need to remember to click Apply when you finish reordering your apps to see the changes on your mobile device.

Drag apps from the screen preview to the screen list to move them

Here's how to organize apps in iTunes instead of on your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad:

  • Make sure iTunes is running, and connect your iPad to your computer with a Dock to USB cable.
  • Select your iPad in the iTunes Library column.
  • Click the Apps tab.
  • Select the Home screen page preview that includes the app you want to move. The preview list is on the right side of the iTunes window.
  • Once you select a Home screen app page, you'll see a larger view where you can select individual apps and drag them to the page you want to put them on in the page preview list.

Be sure to click Sync when you finish organizing your apps to push the changes to your mobile device.

iTunes may not offer the most elegant system for managing your iPhone, iPod touch and iPad apps, but it's usually easier than managing apps on the device.

Is your iPhone or iPad homescreen a mess with scattered apps that aren't in folders? Always been meaning to organize your apps?

It's been ten years of iPhone and Apple still hasn't made it easy to rearrange apps into folders. Users need to painstakingly tap, hold and drag apps one by one, by moving them to the edge of their screens to move between pages.

But did you know there's a faster way? Thanks to this tip shared on Reddit, Multi-touch allows you to move an app between pages by swiping with your other hand. Yes, that's right—you no longer need to tap, hold and drag. Now you can just tap, hold and swipe with another finger.

Watch the Latest Apple Technology News Below

On iOS, I always thought that you always had to move an app to the side off the screen when moving an app, but you can just move it and scroll with another finger. The magic of multitouch.
